Went to see the new Star Trek movie with Daniel, Ian and Elsa tonight. Not being a Star Trek fan (one of the few geeky things I just couldn’t get into), I wasn’t really sure what to make of it before going in. I’d heard good things about it from reviews and accounts from colleagues and being a series reboot, it should have been accessible at least.
The creator of Lost has certainly outdone himself this time, after the piss-poor Cloverfield. The choice of actors was pretty much bang on and the special effects are literally out of this world, creating a world nodding towards the original series, but less camp. It also breaks the odd-even Star Trek movie rule at long last!
The summer season of movies has once again begun.

Cloverfield? Piss Poor?
It was one of the first movies I got on BRD because I thought it was a great movie. Non traditional camera work and viewpoint applied to a cliched movie stereotype.
Anyway, on to Trek….I’ve now seen it 3 times, once in IMAX. I am nothing but impressed, and I really hope they launch a BRD loaded to the gunnels with extras.
It’s interesting what JJ did, he took the universe and mixed a little bit of Enterprise, a lot of Original Series, and a good dose of new work to create something that while being retro in places seems to genuinely work. Simon Pegg needs to work on his accent (and seems to be writing his own script again) but mostly the crew was spot on.
Speaking as a fan of Trek I can say there were a lot of nods to the old stuff and some very conscious decisions to say “This IS different”.
I could go on for hours….but won’t.

Cloverfield doesn’t rate well with me because of the “non traditional camera work”; I felt like throwing up every 5 minutes in the cinema and several people even walked out, which I’ve never seen before.
